A remarkable “bridge of life” was created today for five patients in the early hours of the morning at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Henry Dunant Hospital Center through the organ donation of a 61-year-old woman from Evia, who lost her battle for life a cerebral hemorrhage.

The family of the patient, who had been declared brain dead following the required clinical assessments, made the courageous decision to give the gift of life to other patients through the donation of her organs. This was followed by a lengthy organ procurement procedure, involving the medical and nursing staff of Henry Dunant Hospital Center under the overall coordination of the Hellenic Transplant Organization (EOM), which was also responsible for determining the recipients.

Specifically, compatible recipients were identified for both kidneys at Laiko General Hospital and for the corneas at the Athens Eye Hospital, while an international organ transfer was arranged for the liver after a compatible recipient was identified in Italy.

It should be noted that, since its establishment, the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Henry Dunant Hospital Center has played a leading role in organ donation and transplantation, contributing to the utilization of more than 450 donated organs that have given the gift of life to an equal number of patients.
