New ways to treat high-risk patients with heart disease are being developed with the use of advanced technological means and methods now applied in our country. Henry Dunant Hospital Center is playing a leading role in this field too. Last week, the first percutaneous aortic valve implantation in Greece was performed at Henry Dunant Hospital Center using a new generation Lotus Edge valve.
The surgery was performed in an 84-year-old patient with a severe aortic valve stenosis, certifying the prominent position of the hospital which, after thorough assessment, was selected for the first implantation of the new valve. The procedure was performed by Mr. Vaios Tzifos, Mr. Athanasios Kolyviras and Mr Georgios Tzanis, doctors of the 3rd Cardiology Department of Interventional Cardiology & Valvular Diseases.
The procedure performed in the 84-year-old female patient is included in the first 90 cases of the Limited Market Evaluation Registry, which are carried out in selected centers of excellence in Europe with the participation of experienced interventional cardiologists. The new aortic valve is considered to be the next generation valve; is placed with precision under a fully controlled environment, even in the most demanding cases and is the only mechanically expandable valve with the possibility of replacement to optimize the end result, ensuring an intervention with minimal complications and rapid recovery of patients.
“Henry Dunant Hospital Center not only monitors every development at international level, but is a Center of reference for percutaneous intervention of patients with valvular diseases. The new digital angiography system, our well-trained staff along with our experience in the field of invasive cardiology, enables us to perform pioneering interventions. The successful placement of the first Lotus Edge valve in Greece is another proof that Henry Dunant Hospital Center pioneers…”, stated Mr. Vaios Tzifos, director of the 3rd Cardiology Department of Interventional Cardiology & Valvular Diseases.
The successful surgical procedure was carried out using the Henry Dunant’s most modern digital cardiac angiography ceiling mounted system, providing the ability to perform the most modern invasive techniques.
