Breast cancer diagnostic methods have evolved to such an extent that it is possible to detect tumors at a fairly early stage. As a result, surgical procedures have become smaller, the– already high– rates of successful interventions and effective therapies are further enhanced, and in conjunction with advanced osmotic techniques, the cosmetic results are extraordinary.
That was the central conclusion of the 2nd Interdisciplinary breast cancer symposium “Modern Views and Perspectives”, which was held at Henry Dunant Hospital Center with the participation of leading Greek and foreign scientists. The seminar was organized by the Hellenic Gynaecologic Society for Breast Disease under the auspices of the Hellenic Breast Radiology Association and the Hellenic Obstetrics & Gynaecology Society, in the aim to promote and discuss the latest international developments in breast cancer treatment.
One of the innovative methods presented was CESM (Contrast Enhanced Spectral Mammography). This method allows a more accurate identification of lesions, as these are enhanced with the intravenous infusion of an iodinated contrast agent in a mammogram image, the entire background of which has been digitally substracted. The new method, which is now also implemented in Greece, was praised by Dr. Virgilio Sacchini, a world-famous surgeon who specializes in breast cancer, director and active clinical researcher at New York Memorial Sloan Kettering Breast Center.
Presenting the key findings of the conference, the Director of the Breast Clinic of the Gynecology Department of Henry Dunant Hospital Center, Michalis Mavroudis also highlighted the following:
- Preoperative diagnosis is necessary for the proper treatment of breast problems as it determines the plan of treatment. In case of suspected lesion, an identification by histology is recommended using core biopsy. This protocol is implemented in all International Breast Units, offers maximum diagnostic accuracy and ensures proper pre-operative planning.
- Ultrasound-guided sentinel lymph node biopsy is of major importance. Initial diagnosis, might lead to biopsy avoidance.
It should be noted that the scientific conference was held as part of the wider Henry Dunant Hospital Center’s “Breast Cancer Awareness Month” action program (October 2018). While presenting the basic conclusions, Dr. Sacchini also announced the scientific collaboration of Henry Dunant Hospital Center Breast Cancer Department with the Memorial Sloan Kettering Breast Center.
