Activities

The entire range of central and peripheral nervous system diseases are fully investigated on a clinical level by our highly experienced staff. The support provided by the neuroradiology laboratory and the intensive care unit (ICU) is unparalleled, whereas immediate priority is given to patients with neurological problems requiring urgent investigation and treatment.Upon discharge, a detailed information sheet detailing the diagnosis, the laboratory findings, the course and the therapeutic approach is provided to our hospitalized patients along with the discharge note.

Outpatient Unit

It operate on a daily basis. Apart from the general neurology, our outpatient neurology division comprises of units dedicated to the treatment of the following diseases and conditions: headache, stroke, demyelinating diseases, Parkinson’s disease, memory impairment and neuromuscular diseases.

The Parkinson's disease Unit

Along with medical treatment, offers integrated management of the patients’ multiple health problems. The department has been recognized internationally as a specialized center, since staff members of the department are involved in major research efforts supported by European and American organizations.

The Neuromuscular disease Unit

It provides full patient investigation and assessment (neurophysiological examination, muscle biopsy – muscle morphology, specific staining, immunohistochemistry and neurogenetic studies). The department, in collaboration with the “Korgialenio-Benakio” Hellenic Red Cross Hospital, conducts biochemical investigations for the detection of metabolic myopathies. The contribution of the departmental staff to the investigation of neuromuscular diseases has gained recognition on a national and international level. Staff members have long-term experience, have participated in specialized studies, have won competitive research programs and are significantly contributing to the addition of new knowledge.

Specialized Demyelinating Disease Unit

A large number of patients are monitored featuring a specially designed area for daily hospitalizations. It covers the entire spectrum of diagnostic approaches and therapeutic interventions.

The Headache Unit

It covers the whole range of diagnostic approaches and therapeutic interventions and is part of a broader pain management program (in collaboration with the neurosurgery and anesthesiology department).

The Special Clinic for Dementia (Special Memory Clinic) aims to address the modern population’s growing needs for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of memory cognitive disorders in general.

Most often these disorders are associated with memory, but may also involve speech, orientation in time and space, daily function and behavior. Although these disorders most frequently occur in older ages, they can appear at all ages, especially when daily conditions involve increased psychological stress and fatigue.

The role of the memory clinic is to initially identify the cases of each disorder, which can range from intense anxiety to a neurodegenerative condition (Alzheimer’s Disease, Parkinson’s Disease, Vascular dementia, Frontotemporal dementia, etc.) and then to propose the appropriate treatment depending on each case. At the same time the clinic offers the patient and his/her family support and training throughout their effort.

The highly specialized staff of the Neurophysiology Clinic performs comprehensive neurophysiological assessment (electromyography, electroencephalography, transcranial doppler, evoked potentials). The department has been recognized as a center of clinical studies in the field of neurology and results are published in international medical journals. In terms of education, the department organizes lectures, case analysis meetings, small educational symposia, and provides physicians the opportunity to receive further training in the fields of electromyography, electroencephalography and neuromuscular diseases. Regarding the field of research, the department carries out clinical studies and research protocols in collaboration with various research centers in Greece (Laboratory of Muscle Diseases of Korgialenio Benakio Hospital - founded by Professor A. Papadimitriou), Biochemistry Laboratory of the University of Athens, Laboratory of Neurogenetics University of Thessaly) and abroad ( University of Milan, Columbia University USA, Imperial College in London).
