3rd Department of Cardiology/Interventional Cardiology & Valvulopathy
3rd Department of Cardiology/Interventional Cardiology & Valvulopathy is a fully-equipped and specialized department, with the ability to carry out a wide range of diagnostic and interventional procedures, such as coronary angioplasty, percutaneous coronary angioplasty, antegrade and retrograde revascularization of chronic totally occluded coronary arteries, percutaneous aortic valve replacement (TAVI – TAVR), diagnostic cardiac catheterization, myocardial biopsy, mitral or pulmonary valvuloplasty and ventricular septal ablation in hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy. Thanks to its emphasis on modern techniques and a personalized approach for each patient, it is the “heart” of integrated care for people with heart conditions requiring interventional treatment.
More specifically, the following diagnostic and therapeutic interventions are performed in the department:
Coronary angiography under fluoroscopic guidance. The arteries that provide blood to the heart (coronary arteries) are displayed in real time (as a continuous cinematic loop). Cardiac function can also be assessed.
Left and right cardiac catheterization
Valvular heart disease study: assessment of aortic, mitral, pulmonary and tricuspid valve stenosis and regurgitation.
Comprehensive study of congenital heart diseases, intracardiac pressure measurement, coronary angiography, left and right cardiac ventriculography, pulmonary angiography, aortography, cardiac output assessment, pulmonary and peripheral resistance calculation, intracardiac communications or large vascular communications evaluation.
Therapeutic interventional procedures:
Percutaneous coronary interventions
Antegrade and retrograde revascularization of chronic totally occluded coronary arteries
Left main (LM) coronary artery angioplasty
Angioplasty for the treatment of bifurcation lesions
Angioplasty for the treatment of multivessel complex coronary artery disease
Implantation of bioabsorbable stents
Percutaneous aortic valve replacement Rotational atherectomy (rotablation)
Non-surgical percutaneous mitral balloon valvuloplasty
Balloon pulmonary and other valve valvuloplasty
Alcohol septal ablation for hypertrophic cardiomyopathy
Foreign body removal from the heart or the great vessels
The department features the following specialized equipment:
- Two cardiac angiography suites equipped with the Philips Integris and Philips Allura X-ray systems.
- Intracardiac pressure recorder (Record V6 Siemens)
- Blood gas analyzer (ΟSΜ 3 Ηemoximeter Radiometer, Copenhagen)
- Contrast media injector (Angiomat 6000 LF Digital Injection System)
- Intracoronary ultrasonography system (ΙVUS Galaxy tm2 Boston Scientific)
- Intra-aortic circulatory assist pump (System 96 Intra-Aortic Balloon Pump Datascope)
- Ventilatory support device «ΚΙΟΝ» (SC 7000 Siemens)
