1st Clinic of Hematology

The 1st Clinic of Hematology  is actively involved in all areas of clinical and laboratory hematology providing investigation, diagnosis and treatment as well as monitoring of all blood diseases, particularly hematological malignancies. The aim of the clinic is to provide world-class services in cooperation with other departments. In this context, it is constantly evolving in order to be able to meet the high medical needs of hematology patients anytime they arise, as well as to apply the innovative therapies that are utilized in the field of hematology.

Activities

  • Treatment of hematology patients: either as inpatients hospitalized in the various departments or in the specialized one day clinic (ODC)
  • Cooperation with other specialties in order to provide comprehensive treatment of hematology patients on a multidisciplinary basis. The department participates at the Oncology Council meetings where it presents its hematology cases. The meetings take place twice a month, in the presence of physicians of all related specialties (radiologists, internal medicine physicians, radiotherapists, oncologists, etc.).
  • The department performs autologous bone marrow stem cell transplantation/peripheral blood stem cell transplantation for the treatment of hematology diseases, whenever required and in accordance with international guidelines. It features a Hematology Apheresis Unit and cooperates with the Blood Bank Department for collection and storage of PBSCs.
  • Therapeutic plasmapheresis for the treatment of both hematologic diseases and diseases of other specialties (e.g., neurologic diseases etc.) for which the use of plasmapheresis is indicated.
  •  Provides counseling regarding hematology issues to patients from other departments of all specialties
  • On call on a daily 24 hour basis for covering the needs of the emergency department (ED)
  • Outpatient division, which operates on a daily basis and includes:

 

General unit

It offers counseling services and diagnostic approach, monitoring of patients on a regular and emergency outpatient basis, collection of data regarding the needs and specificities of hematology patients

 

Anti-Coagulation

It treat hemostasis, investigates blood clotting disorders, conducts testing for thrombophilia and anticoagulation treatment control.

 

Invasive procedures unit

With experience and expertise in conducting bone marrow biopsy- sternal puncture, therapeutic apheresis, intravenous and subcutaneous drug administration, such as Fe, bisphosphonates, etc., (medical procedures for which no admission to the one day clinic is needed; these procedures are carried out in the presence of the department’s physician with the assistance of specialized nursing staff)

  • Archiving of cases: The Department’s Secretariat stores the Hematology patient’s medical files that include records and monitoring data. A separate record is kept for outpatients visiting the Outpatient Clinic.
  • Research activity: a) Clinical studies in cooperation with the working groups of the Hellenic Society of Hematology, b) in International Therapeutic Protocols under the approval of the National Organization for Medicines (EOF).
