Frequently asked questions:

  1. What is a bone marrow transplant? Bone marrow transplantation treats malignant diseases, such as leukemia and lymphoma, as well as benign diseases, such as thalassemia and sickle cell anemia. Moreover, it is applied in cases of rare degenerative neurological diseases.
  2. How likely am I to be compatible with someone? The chance of you being a compatible donor for a patient within your family is about 25%. On the other hand, being a compatible unrelated donor for a third person is extremely rare. This means that you can be the only hope for the patient.
  3. How is a transplant obtained? The most common method nowadays is to collect hematopoietic cells from peripheral blood in a way similar to that of blood donation. The most common adverse reactions are headache and mild pain in the bones and muscles, which resolve with common painkillers. The second method is to collect cells from the bone marrow. The process takes less than an hour. Some donors may experience localized mild pain for a few days.
  4. Do I have the right to overturn my decision regarding the donation? You can revoke your decision regarding the donation at all stages of the process in case you do not feel ready to proceed.
  5. How can I become a bone marrow donor? The procedure is as follows:
    1. You fill in the application form for becoming a volunteer donor of hematopoietic cells.
    2. You give a sample of your saliva with a cotton swab for tissue type identification.
    3. The results of the laboratory analysis are registered in the National Transplant Organization (ΕΟΜ) and the World Bone Marrow Donor Registry (BMDW).
    As simple as that!
