On Monday, May 19, the Phytobiosomes exhibition by acclaimed Greek-American artist Costas Picadas begun its journey at Henry Dunant Hospital, bringing art and health together, and inviting patients and visitors alike to explore the organic relationship between the human body and the healing elements provided by nature.
The works in the collection will be on display until September 30, 2025, in the hospital's reception areas, with free admission to the public. At the opening of this original exhibition, which is the first major thematic exhibition in Greece by the influential Costas Picadas, emphasis was placed on the harmonious connection between nature and man and the interior of an organism that is regenerating and “blooming.” The unique way in which Picadas composes—through 24 works and two special video art creations—images of intangible organs and plants, each of which conceals ancient healing properties, creates an unprecedented visual and cognitive experience.
"I grew up in a family of doctors, always leafing through anatomy books that depicted the organs of the human body in a chillingly realistic way. I sought to gain an awareness of this entire ‘world’ that exists within us, of the organs that work together to keep us alive. I chose to present it by focusing on its beauty. and at the same time, by examining the connection between the human body and nature” noted Costas Picadas at the opening event held in the hospital’s packed amphitheater, adding “Art can live and function everywhere, but presenting this collection at the Henry Dunant Hospital brings out the deeper meaning of my work.
“Our ongoing mission at Henry Dunant is to provide physical wellness and mental uplift to our patients—and artistic creation is a fitting medicine. Costas Picadas’ exhibition is a significant artistic event, and we are proud to be part of it. Moreover, this initiative is yet another demonstration of our commitment to supporting the arts—a commitment that will continue and is already inspiring others to follow,” stated Themos Charamis, Executive Chairman of IMITHEA Group, which owns and operates the hospital.
The opening ceremony was attended by the President of the Hellenic Parliament, Nikitas Kaklamanis, and by numerous representatives from the political, academic, artistic, and medical communities. Thaleia Vrachopoulou, Professor of Visual Arts at John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York, curated the exhibition, and highlighted the hidden details within the Phytobiosomes collection, and former Senator Chris Spirou, reflected on Costas Picadas' artistic journey and his deep connection to the Greek-American community in the US.
