Nephrology

Every patient who trusts the Nephrology Clinic has access to one of the largest and most integrated nephrology centers in the country. The Clinic consists of the Kidney Dialysis Unit, a state-of-the-art center for preparing and performing hemodialysis, the Nephrology Clinic and the Outpatient Clinic. On a weekly basis, the department offers its services to 200 patients who are on a dialysis program. Moreover, the department offers its services to more than 1,000 patients per year at any stage of chronic kidney disease or related issues, such as arterial hypertension and nephrolithiasis. The Clinic’s main aim is the continuous upgrading of its services in order to improve the quality of life of both patients and their families.

Activities

Kidney Dialysis Unit

  • Patient preparation for hemodialysis treatment by dialysis catheter placement 
  • AVF communication (Fistulae); the department operates in three shifts, six days a week and is constantly on call 

Nephrology Clinic

  • Hospitalization

Outpatient Clinics

 Daily service for patients with renal diseases and hypertension, such as: 

  • Primary (essential) hypertension 
  • Malignant hypertension 
  • Renovascular hypertension 
  • Secondary hypertension 
  • Chronic renal disease 
  • Diabetic nephropathy 
  • Nephrolithiasis 
  • Polycystic kidney disease 
  • Glomerulonephritis, Vasculitis. Monitoring of kidney transplant recipients 
  • Evaluation of the kidney transplant recipient before the transplant process

Scientific staff

The Nephrology Clinic is staffed by a team of leading scientists and experienced professionals who for the past 20 years collaborate harmoniously providing outstanding and highly efficient services. More specifically, the clinic employs: 

  • Nephrologists, specialized in all fields of nephrology under the guidance of the Clinic’s Director, Mr. Spyridon Moutafis
  • Specialized nurses, with at least 20 years of experience in the care of dialysis patients, who constantly update and enrich their knowledge through the “Continuing Education” Program held by the Henry Dunant Hospital's Nursing Department. 

At the same time, our Clinic supports our patients, during hospitalization or hemodialysis, who require special care and treatment derived from any type of medical specialty (cardiologists, surgeons, etc.), while the collaborating vascular-interventional clinics of Henry Dunant Hospital Center fully cover additional procedures such as:

  • renal biopsy 
  • dialysis line (central venous catheter) insertion (temporary or permanent) 
  • arteriovenous anastomosis creation (fistula or graft)

Equipment

The Henry Dunant’s state-of-the-art Kidney Dialysis Unit is equipped with the following: 

  • 30 state-of-the-art 6008 CAREsystem hemodialysis machines by Fresenius Medical Care capable of applying all hemodialysis methods (classic hemodialysis, on-line hemodiafiltration in all positions).
  • Low and high flux hemodialysis filters
  • A unit for Hepatitis B patients 
  • A Unit for Covid + patients
  • A state-of-the-art on-line water treatment system 
  • Electric motorized hospital beds and Wi-Fi connection in all rooms
  • ISO 9001 certification for the Unit’s clinical and administrative operation 
  • 24-hour medical support with a nephrologist on call and provision of emergency hemodialysis if judged necessary
  • An emergency Cardiopulmonary resuscitation team (code blue) for acute cases 
  • Collaboration with the entire range of medical specialties as well as other specialties of the Henry Dunant Hospital, such as dietitians, physiotherapists, social workers, psychologists etc.
