5th Clinic of Cardiology

The 5th Clinic of Cardiology / Valvular Heart Disease of the Henry Dunant Hospital Center, is staffed by an experienced team of Cardiologists and Cardiac Surgeons with significant clinical and scientific work, specializing in the diagnosis and treatment of structural heart diseases and coronary artery disease. All the latest ultrasound imaging techniques are applied in the department, with the ability to perform functional tests using medicine or the classic exercise stress test, as well as 3D and 4D ultrasound imaging for the assessment and monitoring of heart diseases. The interventional team has many years of experience in the treatment of coronary artery disease and its complex forms, and specializes in percutaneous replacement and repair of valves and other structural diseases. The surgical team treats the entire spectrum of cardiovascular diseases, including coronary artery disease and heart tumors, and has many years of experience in the treatment of valvular diseases with a particular interest in mitral valve repair.

The collaboration between the Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery teams offers a comprehensive approach to the management of patient conditions in order to select the appropriate treatment, either surgical or minimally invasive through a percutaneous approach.

Activities

Echocardiography department:

The department is staffed by cardiologists specialized in cardiac imaging and accredited by the European Association of Cardiovascular Imaging (EACVI). The following examinations are performed in the department:

  • Transthoracic echo with the possibility of 3D and 4D imaging of cardiac structures and the assessment of myocardial contractility using specialized software (2D - 3D strain)
  • Contrast echo, using a bubble test or a contrast echo medium to detect structural diseases, intracardiac thrombi, masses or perfusion defects.
  • Transesophageal echocardiogram (TEE) which allows for a 3D imaging of the structures of the heart. The examination is performed under local anaesthesia and mild sedation.
  • Dynamic Stress Echocardiography (Stress Echo) to assess the likelihood of coronary artery disease using physical exercise on a treadmill, stationary bike or when under a drug-induced stress
  • Dynamic Valve Echocardiography (on treadmill or bicycle) for the functional and quantitative assessment of valvular disease during exercise.
  • Classic treadmill fatigue test for the detection of coronary artery disease and the assessment of functional stage and cardiac arrhythmias.

Department of Interventional Cardiology:

In the department of Interventional Cardiology are carried out:

  • Diagnostic coronary angiography.
  • Complete left and right heart catheterization for the investigation of pulmonary hypertension, and the assessment of structural heart diseases and pericardial diseases.
  • Intracoronary stent placement or drug-eluting balloon angioplasty.
  • Angioplasty of chronic total coronary occlusions and complex coronary artery disease by rotational atherectomy (rotablation) and/or intracoronary lithotripsy using ultrasound (shockwave).
  • Primary angioplasty in the acute myocardial infarction setting.
  • Percutaneous aortic valve replacement (TAVI) / balloon valvuloplasty.
  • Percutaneous closure of interatrial communication/patent foramen ovale (PFO) with umbrella placement.
  • Pericardiocentesis for the removal of pericardial fluid on an emergency basis or for diagnostic purposes
  • Myocardial biopsy

Emergency cases: The clinic treats patients with the full range of cardiovascular diseases, providing continuous cardiac care by qualified cardiologists who are on call on a 24-hour basis. Treatment is carried out in a special ward of the hospital with continuous recording of the heart rhythm (telemetry) and monitoring by nurses who are specialized in heart diseases.
