2nd Cardiology Clinic of Bloodless and Interventional Cardiology
The 2nd Cardiology Clinic of Bloodless and Interventional Cardiology, as its title suggests, was created to meet the needs of patients both in a diagnostic and therapeutic level.
The Clinic features an experienced medical staff and state-of-the-art mechanical equipment. It covers the entire spectrum of heart diseases with special emphasis on prevention.
It is on call every day on a 24-hour basis to treat any emergency case, especially acute myocardial infarction with primary angioplasty.

Activities

A. Preventive Cardiology Clinic
In the preventive cardiology unit, the following heart screening can be performed:1. Pre-participation Sports evaluation2. Blood Pressure 3. Lipid Profile 4. Coronary Heart Disease 5. Atrial Fibrillation
B. Heart Failure Unit
The heart failure unit is involved in the treatment of the following cases: 1. Heart Failure2. Pulmonary Hypertension and Systemic Diseases 3. Cardio-oncology 4. Cardiomyopathies
C. Non Invasive Techniques Laboratory
This is comprised of four specialized laboratories:
- Echocardiography laboratory
- Stress testing laboratory
- Myocardial scintigraphy
- Holter monitoring (Heart rhythm and blood pressure)
The echocardiography laboratory applies all modern imaging techniques in the evaluation of the heart and great vessels:
- Two- and three-dimensional echocardiography (Triplex ultrasonography)
- Transesophageal echocardiography
- Dobutamine stress echo
Moreover, modern protocols are applied where needed (e.g. stress echo with adenosine), cardiac dyssynchrony studies can be undertaken, and rare conditions can be thoroughly evaluated.
D. Female Heart Center
This center was established with the aim to inform patients and to provide comprehensive treatment of cardiovascular diseases related to the female heart. It is the only such specialized center in Greece. The Female Heart Center’s key aim is to raise women’s awareness, since women present with different heart conditions at different ages, as compared to men.
E. Exercise and Rehabilitation Clinic
Following myocardial infarction, coronary artery bypass or angioplasty, patients are referred to the Clinic for secondary prevention. It is staffed by cardiologists, a psychologist and a specialist in nutritional interventions. Specifically, it offers:
- psychological support
- nutritional intervention
- modification of risk factors for cardiovascular disease
A Smoking Cessation Clinic also operates within this framework, supporting the clinic’s efforts towards secondary prevention.
Equipment
Inpatient care
Patients entrusting their inpatient management to the 2nd Department of Cardiology are hospitalized in the 5th floor wing that features 22 hospital beds allocated into five (5) single bedded, four (4) two bedded and two (2) four bedded wards, under the care of a well trained nursing staff. The wing is also equipped with a remote electrocardiogram monitoring system (telemetry), operating through a central computer located at the nursing station and supervised by the on-call cardiologist.
